Credit card scam reported in Carroll County

1 min read

CARROLL COUNTY, NH — A resident reported receiving fraudulent calls from someone claiming to represent Citibank regarding unauthorized charges on a credit card account.

The victim received a call from someone purporting to be from his credit card company, who told him a fraudulent card had been obtained in his name.

The caller attempted to obtain personal and financial information from the victim and informed him of a charge of $1,803.61 for three guns from Midway USA on the fraudulent account.

The caller provided an address where the supposedly fraudulent card was sent: 36 Hamilton Ave Unit 6S, Staten Island, New York.

The supposed Citibank representative called the victim back later and asked if he had reported the matter to police.

The victim told the caller he had reported it, and the caller claimed to have also contacted police.

A short time later, the victim received a phone call from someone identifying himself as “Detective Matt Loan” with the New York Police Department.

The victim did not answer the initial call and did not call the supposed detective back.

A sergeant at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office contacted Midway USA, whose fraud department reported being familiar with this attempted theft scheme.

A Midway USA representative said the company receives calls almost daily from across the country about the scam, which involves the same card issuer, Citibank, and the same amount of $1,803.61 for three guns.

The New York Police Department is also familiar with the calls and stated the Staten Island address given in the scam is commonly used in these schemes.

The NYPD refers people who receive such calls to report them to their local law enforcement.

No actual transaction occurred in this case.

Authorities remind residents to never give personal or financial information over the phone or digital device unless they initiated contact with the company directly.

Anyone who receives a similar call should hang up and contact their credit card company directly to verify whether such a charge exists.
