Telephone scam targets residents in Cape May County

1 min read

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, NJ — Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Sheriff Robert Nolan are warning residents about a telephone scam involving callers falsely claiming to be members of the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office.

The scammers tell victims they owe money for fines or missed court appearances and threaten that a warrant will be issued for their arrest if payment is not made immediately, according to authorities.

The callers often demand payment through unconventional methods such as gift cards, wire transfers or other non-traditional means.

The Cape May County Sheriff’s Office and all law enforcement agencies do not contact individuals by phone to demand payment or threaten arrest in exchange for immediate payment.

Law enforcement agencies will never request payment via gift cards, prepaid debit cards or similar methods.

Residents are advised to hang up immediately if they receive such a call and not provide personal or financial information.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of this scam should contact the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office at 609-465-1135.
