SCHENECTADY, NY — A middle school student reported being yelled at by an unknown male from a passing vehicle while walking to school April 22.

The incident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. near Nora Avenue and Robinson Street.

The student from Central Park Middle School told the school’s assigned Community Engagement Officer that the male yelled from the vehicle, telling her to “come here.”

The student continued walking to school without further incident, and the vehicle left the area.

The incident is under investigation by a detective assigned to the school.

The Schenectady Police Department is reminding students and parents to walk in groups whenever possible and stay in well-lit, populated areas.

Police also advise being aware of surroundings and avoiding distractions such as cell phones or headphones.

Authorities say individuals should not approach or engage with unknown people in vehicles.

If approached, police recommend continuing to move toward a safe location such as a school, business or group of people.

Any suspicious activity should be reported to a trusted adult, school official or law enforcement immediately.
