RUPERT, VT — Vermont State Police have charged an ATV operator with DUI after a crash that left one person dead and three others injured Friday night.
Troopers were dispatched to Suncrest Road at approximately 8:25 p.m. for a reported ATV crash with serious injuries.
Upon arrival, rescue and fire personnel were working to extricate one of the occupants from a 2025 CF Moto 1000 XL that had rolled over an embankment after leaving the roadway and striking several trees.
The investigation determined there were five total occupants in the vehicle.
Two passengers were airlifted to Albany Medical Center for serious injuries, while a third was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center.
A fourth passenger died of his injuries on scene during extrication.
The deceased passenger’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
During the investigation, troopers suspected the operator, Ellsworth A. Reed, 33, of West Pawlet, to be under the influence of intoxicants.
Reed was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI.
Reed was later charged with DUI with death resulting and remanded to the Marble Valley Correctional Facility for lack of $5,000 bail.
Reed was issued conditions of release to appear in Bennington County Superior Court, Criminal Division on April 20, 2026 at 12:30 p.m.
The conditions and bail were imposed by the Honorable Judge John Valente.
