WALES, ME — A motorcyclist was killed after striking a utility pole on Route 197 on April 15.

The Androscoggin County Regional Communications Center received a 911 call reporting the crash at approximately 6 p.m.

Deputies from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, along with personnel from the Wales Fire Department, Sabattus Fire Department, Sabattus Police Department and United Ambulance Service.

First responders determined that the crash involved a single motorcycle that had struck a utility pole.

The impact caused the pole to break and fall into the roadway, rendering Route 197 impassable for a period of time.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the operator of the motorcycle, identified as Steven A. Caouette, 51, of Litchfield, was traveling toward Litchfield when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway.

The motorcycle left the travel lane and struck the utility pole.

Caouette was ejected from the motorcycle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

A detective from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist with crash reconstruction.
