SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY — A 44-year-old man died following a physical altercation on West Avenue near Station Lane on the morning of April 14.
Multiple people called 911 at 7:30 a.m. to report the fight, according to the Saratoga Springs Police Department.
Officers arrived on scene and found a male who was in and out of consciousness and bleeding heavily from wounds sustained during the altercation.
The first officer arrived within two minutes of receiving the call and began life-saving efforts, police said.
The Saratoga Springs Fire Department transported the man to Saratoga Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim has been identified as John C. Williamson Jr., who went by the name Clay, of Saratoga Springs.
Williamson was living in a wooded area nearby, police said.
Officers quickly identified and located the other individuals involved in the incident.
Those individuals are cooperating with the investigation, and police said they do not believe there is a threat to the public at this time.
The investigation encompasses a large scene that includes wooded terrain, city streets and businesses open to the public.
The New York State Police assisted in processing the scene and interviewing witnesses.
The Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office assisted with calls for service in the city during the investigation.
Police are coordinating the investigation with the District Attorney’s Office.
No charging decisions have been made.
Police are asking anyone who was in the area of West Avenue at about 7:30 a.m. on April 14 and saw anything relevant to call (518) 584-8477.
Specific areas of focus include Stewart’s Shop at 87 West Avenue, Station Lane, the American Legion at 34 West Avenue and West Avenue between Station Lane and Washington Street.
Anyone with business or dash camera footage is asked to contact police.
