UTICA, NY — A man was arrested after allegedly firing multiple shots at people near a vehicle in Oneida Square on April 12, 2026.
Police were dispatched to the area at approximately 9:15 a.m. regarding a shots fired incident.
Witnesses reported that a male had fired several rounds at individuals near a vehicle, and the vehicle then sped away.
A suspect description was provided to responding officers.
The first arriving officers located a male matching the description on the 1400 block of Oneida Street.
As officers attempted to detain him, they observed him discard a handgun.
Officers secured the weapon, a loaded .40 caliber SigSauer handgun.
The detained party was positively identified as the individual who fired the rounds.
Both the suspect and the weapon were transported to the Utica Police Department.
Joseph Fields, 57, of Utica, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, criminal possession of a firearm, attempted assault in the first degree and reckless endangerment in the first degree.
