BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ — Members of the Berkeley Township Police Department responded to a residence on Anchorage Boulevard in the Bayville section of Berkeley Township for a reported active structure fire during the early morning hours on April 10.

Members of the Bayville Volunteer Fire Department, Pinewald Pioneer Volunteer Fire Department and Manitou Park Volunteer Fire Department also responded to battle the blaze.

Upon arrival of emergency personnel, the home was engulfed in flames, and the residents were safely outside along with a family pet.

Berkeley Township EMT Squad and Bayville Volunteer First Aid Squad responded to assess the residents, at which time it was determined one resident was having a medical emergency and was transported to Community Medical Center for further treatment.

The resident is currently in stable condition and being monitored at Community Medical Center.

The fire was contained and subsequently extinguished by the responding fire apparatus, with the structure suffering heavy fire and smoke damage.

An investigation into the cause of the fire was conducted by the Berkeley Township Fire Prevention Department, Ocean County Fire Marshall’s Office and the Berkeley Township Police Detective Bureau.

The fire was determined to start in a spare room of the residence and is considered to be accidental and non-suspicious in nature.

Investigators believe that the use of electric space heaters within the home is likely a contributing factor to the fire.
