BRUTUS, NY — A Port Byron man faces multiple charges after allegedly igniting a fire inside a vehicle during a traffic stop early Saturday morning.
Douglas H. Wilson, 56, was arrested following the incident that occurred at approximately 1:31 a.m. on April 10, 2026, at the intersection of Ryan Road and Jericho Road.
New York State Police from SP Auburn initiated a traffic stop after observing a vehicle traveling eastbound on Ryan Road operating on the wrong side of the roadway and failing to keep right near a blind hill.
During the stop, troopers identified the driver as Erika A. Smith, with two passengers in the rear seat, including Wilson.
While troopers were conducting the investigation, Wilson was observed reaching toward the floor area and refusing to comply with commands to show his hands.
Moments later, a flame ignited inside the vehicle, rapidly spreading in the rear passenger area.
All occupants were safely removed from the vehicle and detained.
Troopers extinguished the fire using a division-issued fire extinguisher.
The Weedsport Fire Department responded to the scene.
Further investigation revealed that Wilson allegedly ignited a substance inside the vehicle while in possession of what is believed to be crack cocaine and a butane torch.
Evidence recovered at the scene included approximately 2 grams of suspected crack cocaine, a smoking device with residue, and a torch lighter.
Wilson was charged with arson 4th degree, tampering with physical evidence, two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance 7th degree, obstructing governmental administration 2nd degree, and two counts of reckless endangerment 2nd degree.
He was processed and issued appearance tickets returnable to the Town of Brutus Court at a later date.
No serious injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
