Man arrested in cold case homicide in Vernon

VERNON, NJ — A North Carolina man has been arrested in connection with a 1990 homicide in Vernon Township.

Robert William McCaffrey Jr., 54, of Manteo, North Carolina, was taken into custody at approximately 8 p.m. Thursday in Dare County, North Carolina, by a multi-state law enforcement task force.

Representatives from the New Jersey State Police, Vernon Township Police Detective Bureau and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office traveled to Dare County and coordinated with the Dare County Sheriff’s Department to effect the arrest.

McCaffrey is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree burglary in connection with the homicide of Lisa McBride.

McCaffrey is being held in Dare County, North Carolina, pending extradition.

McBride resided in the Highland Lakes section of Vernon Township and was murdered in June 1990.
