PITTSFIELD, MA — The Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to be from the agency.
The office said it has received multiple reports from community members regarding scam phone calls claiming to be from the sheriff’s office.
The caller states that there is a warrant for the individual’s arrest and that it can be cleared with a payment, according to the sheriff’s office.
Some individuals have also reported coming to the sheriff’s office due to these calls.
The phone number being used is 413-400-8428, and the caller identifies themselves as “Sergeant Walker.”
The sheriff’s office said it does not have a Sergeant Walker on staff.
The phone number is not associated with the office.
The sheriff’s office said it would never call someone to notify them of a warrant or request payment over the phone.
Law enforcement would address such matters in person, according to the office.
The sheriff’s office is advising residents who receive a call from this number to not engage and to simply let it go to voicemail or hang up.
