Man arrested on assault charges in East Lansdowne

EAST LANSDOWNE, PA — A 25-year-old man was arrested following an assault at a gas station on Baltimore Avenue.

Khabir Karim Smith, of Darby, was taken into custody at the Exxon Gas station located at 1001 Baltimore Avenue on April 8, 2026.

East Lansdowne Police were dispatched to the location at approximately 9:44 a.m. for a report of an assault in progress.

Upon arrival, Officer Stephen Mengini made contact with an adult female who stated she was assaulted several times by her boyfriend.

Smith was located on scene and detained.

A review of CCTV footage from the gas station showed the female victim standing at the checkout counter inside the Exxon store when Smith entered and began assaulting her on the head, face and body, according to police.

The female fled the store and was again assaulted by Smith, police said.

The victim broke free and was chased down by Smith, who then dragged her across the parking lot and attempted to force her into his vehicle, according to police.

The victim exited the vehicle and attempted to find refuge in a stranger’s vehicle, where she was again dragged back into Smith’s vehicle, police said.

Additional East Lansdowne Police officers and Lansdowne Police officers took Smith into custody.

Smith was charged with simple assault, kidnap to inflict injury or terror, unlawful restraint and recklessly endangering another person.

Smith was booked and arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Vann.

Bail was set at $50,000 at 10 percent.

Smith was unable to supply the required bail and was transported to G.W. Hill Correctional Facility to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for April 17, 2026.
