Man in mental health crisis surrenders after standoff in North Tonawanda

NORTH TONAWANDA, NY — Police responded to the first block of Wheatfield Street for a report of a man experiencing a mental health crisis on April 9, 2026.

The call came in at approximately 11:38 a.m., with the caller reporting the man was armed with a long gun inside a residence and threatening self-harm.

The TNT SWAT team was activated and negotiators established communication with the man.

At approximately 3:10 p.m., negotiators successfully de-escalated the situation and talked the man out of the residence.

The man was transported to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

A long gun was recovered at the scene and secured.
