Suspect sought in knife assault at drug store in Newark

NEWARK, NJ — Police are seeking the public’s help identifying a suspect who cut a drug store employee with a knife after being caught shoplifting on March 28, 2026.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., the suspect walked into Walgreens on Ferry Street with a woman and four children, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda Sr.

The suspect, described as a known shoplifter, and the group began taking merchandise until a security guard spotted them.

As they were being escorted from the store, an employee left the register to assist.

The suspect pulled out a knife and swung at the employee, cutting him on his hand before fleeing west on Ferry Street.
