CORTLAND, NY — The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a traffic ticket scam targeting area residents.

The sheriff’s office said it has received several calls regarding fraudulent notices being sent to victims.

The scam involves a generalized notice advising recipients they must pay an outstanding fine from the City of New York, according to authorities.

The fake documents include a QR code to scan and pay balances, as well as sections threatening suspensions, credit issues or other penalties.

Sheriff Mark E. Helms said the fraudulent documents do not identify any specific individual.

Authorities are advising residents not to scan the QR code or pay any fines through this method.

The sheriff’s office reminded residents to never give out personal information online or in person to anyone they do not know.

Residents should also never give out banking information or pay fines with gift cards or prepaid credit cards, according to the warning.
