PENN YAN, NY — A 40-year-old man was arrested at a local park after allegedly providing false information to police and claiming to be a state trooper.

Elijah F. Tretts, of North Collins, was arrested by Penn Yan Police following a complaint at Red Jacket Park.

Police said Tretts was a passenger in a vehicle parked at the park after it had closed.

When officers made contact with Tretts, he provided a fake name, address and date of birth, according to police.

Tretts also told officers he was a member of the New York State Police and became uncooperative, police said.

The Penn Yan Police Department later discovered the man’s true identity and determined Tretts was not a member of any law enforcement agency.

Tretts was taken into custody without incident.

He was charged with criminal impersonation in the first degree, entering/remaining on premises after close and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Tretts was transported to the Yates County Jail to await centralized arraignment.
