YORK, ME — Police are warning residents about callers posing as law enforcement officers in an attempt to steal personal information or money.
The York Police Department said it has received numerous reports of people receiving calls from someone claiming to be a York police officer or York County sheriff’s deputy.
The scammer tells residents they have a pending citation or summons against them, police said.
The caller then uses the ploy to obtain personal information or convince the person to pay money, according to police.
Police are advising anyone who receives such a call to hang up and contact the York Police Department directly at 207-363-4444.
Residents should never call a phone number provided over the phone or via text message, police said.
Instead, people should call the department at a number they already know or look up themselves, according to the warning.
