SPRINGPORT, NY — A man was arrested on drunken driving and multiple traffic charges after allegedly fleeing from a deputy attempting a traffic stop.

Simon J. Fricano, 43, of Springport, was arrested March 20 at 9:05 p.m. on Backus Road and State Route 326, according to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck.

Fricano was charged with driving while intoxicated, improper turn signal, failure to keep right, open container and moved from lane unsafely.

Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle at approximately 9:02 p.m. on Backus Road near State Route 326.

When the deputy attempted the traffic stop, the vehicle would pull over and then accelerate away from the deputy, according to the sheriff’s office.

The operator of the vehicle was also swerving and failed to use his turn signal when required.

The operator pulled into a driveway and exited his vehicle.

During the investigation, it was determined that Fricano was intoxicated by alcohol.

Fricano was brought to the Public Safety Building, where he refused to provide a breath chemical sample to determine his blood alcohol content.

He was then brought to Cayuga County Jail where he was arraigned at centralized arraignment court and released.

Fricano appeared in Springport Town Court on March 25 at 4 p.m.
