CORTLAND, NY — The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam involving callers claiming to work for DIRECTV.
Sheriff Mark E. Helms said his office has received several calls regarding the scam.
The callers are telling victims that a discount on their services is set to be terminated on the day of the call and that victims need to call back to continue their discounts.
The scammer will then answer the return call and request personal information that should already be on file with DIRECTV.
The sheriff’s office is reminding residents to never share personal information with anyone they do not know.
Residents should never share banking information or believe they can pay a debt with gift cards or prepaid credit cards.
The sheriff’s office advises residents to always contact companies at their advertised phone lines to confirm any alleged changes in services.
