CANANDAIGUA, NY — The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate deputies and demand money.
Several people have reported receiving calls from someone claiming to be a member of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office requesting money to pay a family member’s bail, according to authorities.
The sheriff’s office said it will never ask for or demand payment over the phone or use such tactics.
Residents who receive such calls are advised not to provide any personal information or make payments.
Authorities recommend hanging up and contacting the sheriff’s office directly at 585-394-4560 to verify any questions or concerns.
