Police warn of DMV phishing scam in DeWitt

1 min read

DEWITT, NY — The DeWitt Police Department is warning residents about a phishing scam involving text messages that appear to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The fraudulent messages claim recipients have outstanding traffic tickets or violations and direct them to click a link or make a payment immediately to avoid penalties.

Police said the DMV will not contact people via text message demanding payment.

The messages are designed to steal personal and financial information, according to police.

The links included in the texts often lead to fake websites that appear official but are not legitimate.

Police are advising residents not to click on any links or respond to the messages.

Residents should not provide any personal or banking information and should delete the messages immediately.

Anyone unsure about a ticket or DMV issue should contact the DMV directly through their official website, phone number or in person.

Police said anyone who believes they may have fallen victim to the scam should contact their local police department by calling 911.
