GROTON, CT — Police are warning residents about out-of-state pet breeders who have attempted to scam and successfully defrauded multiple city residents.
The City of Groton Police Department said it has received multiple reports of the scam targeting local residents.
Police are advising buyers to thoroughly research any companies and their social media accounts before making any purchases.
The scammers use different company names and locations but employ the same methods, according to police.
Red flags include breeders who communicate only through third-party messaging apps or social media, police said.
Scammers also ask buyers to send money to multiple fake companies and request continuous additional fees after the initial purchase was made, according to police.
Police are asking anyone who is suspicious and believes they are being scammed under these circumstances to contact the department immediately at (860) 445-2451.
