JAY, NY — New York State Police arrested a man on multiple charges following a domestic dispute on March 18, 2026.

James F. Gaffney, 37, of Ausable Forks, was charged with two counts of Criminal Contempt in the First Degree (prior conviction), Aggravated Family Offense, and Resisting Arrest.

Troopers responded to Hazen Road at approximately 12:28 a.m. for a report of a domestic dispute.

An investigation determined that Gaffney violated a full stay-away order of protection when he went to a residence where his two daughters, who are the protected parties, were located.

While being interviewed, Gaffney became visibly upset and highly aggressive.

When troopers attempted to take him into custody, he refused to comply.

Troopers were able to safely detain him and place him into custody.

Gaffney was transported to SP Ray Brook for processing.

He was later arraigned in the Town of Jay Court and remanded to the Essex County Jail.
