Fatal police encounter in Evesham Township

EVESHAM TOWNSHIP, NJ — A police encounter early Friday morning resulted in one person’s death and an officer being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident occurred at approximately 4:40 a.m. in the vicinity of State Highway 73 and Greentree Road, according to Evesham Township Police Chief Thomas Reinholt.

One individual sustained fatal injuries during the encounter.

One member of the police department was removed from the scene for non-life-threatening medical treatment.

Police said there is no active or ongoing threat to the public.

The scene has been secured by law enforcement.

Residents are advised to avoid the area of State Highway 73 between Greentree Road and Lincoln Drive due to road closures.

The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General is investigating the incident.

A 2019 state law requires the Attorney General’s Office to conduct all investigations when a person’s death occurs during an encounter with a law enforcement officer acting in an official capacity or while the person is in custody.

The investigation is being handled by the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability.
