Driver arrested after crash in Swanton

SWANTON, VT — Police arrested a 19-year-old man three days after he allegedly crashed into a parked tractor trailer and fled the scene.

Jacob Totten, of Highgate, was taken into custody March 19 outside 77 Virginia Lane in Highgate without incident.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:29 p.m. March 16 in the rear parking lot of Champlain Farms located at 188 First St.

Officers arrived to find an unregistered 2004 Subaru with significant front-end damage had crashed into the front end of a 2017 Freightliner tractor, causing significant damage to the tractor.

The operator of the Subaru had fled the scene.

The operator of the tractor was confused but uninjured.

Officers from Swanton Village Police Department, St. Albans Police Department and Milton Police Department with K9 Biscotti attempted to locate Totten but were unsuccessful.

Officers discovered that prior to the crash, Totten had been operating at speeds more than 30 mph over posted speed limits.

It was also discovered that Totten had been harassing his girlfriend and had attempted to strangle her earlier in the evening.

Totten was lodged at Northwestern Correctional Facility on $5,000 bail and scheduled to be arraigned at 1 p.m. the same day in Franklin County Superior Court Criminal Division.
