BRUNSWICK, NY — State Police arrested a Mechanicville man on animal cruelty charges March 5, 2026.

Edward J. Madlin, 35, of Mechanicville, faces twelve counts of Agriculture & Market 353- Overdriving, Torturing and Injuring Animals: Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance, a class “A” misdemeanor.

State Police received information Jan. 8, 2026, that a cow and multiple horses had been kept in deplorable conditions with insufficient food and water on a property on State Route 40 in Schaghticoke.

The animals were reportedly found to have insufficient food, water, and hoof care along with unsanitary living conditions.

The Melrose Fire Department assisted in removing some of the animals from stalls, as the manure buildup, approximately 2-6 feet deep, required the animals to be extricated.

In total, 11 horses and 1 cow were surrendered from the property with the assistance of community members and turned over to the care of Dorset Equine Rescue, Little Brook Farm, Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals, and Tomten Farm and Sanctuary.

Further investigation determined that although Madlin did not reside at the location, he was allegedly responsible for the animals’ care.

Madlin was arrested at his home and transported to SP Brunswick for processing.

He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Schaghticoke Town Court on April 13, 2026, and released.
