Loader struck by car in Bridport

BRIDPORT, VT — A Vergennes man was injured when his car collided with a loader on Vermont Route 22a on March 18, 2026.

William Kittredge, 28, of Vergennes, was traveling southbound on Route 22a at approximately 3:01 p.m. when Earl Audet, 61, of Bridport, entered the highway from a private road west of Cross Road.

Audet was operating a John Deere 324L loader and failed to yield the right-of-way to Kittredge’s 2016 Volkswagen Jetta, according to Vermont State Police.

The Jetta struck the left side of the loader as Audet crossed into the southbound lane.

Kittredge sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Porter Medical Center by Middlebury EMS.

Audet was not injured.

The Jetta sustained front-end damage and was totaled.

Audet was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Weather conditions were clear and the road was dry.

Audet was cited for violating 23 VSA 1049, vehicle entering from private road, which carries a $220 fine and two points.

The Bridport Fire Department and Snow and Tow assisted troopers from the New Haven Barracks at the scene.
