Fatal fire in Mamakating

MAMAKATING, NY — A 64-year-old man died in a house fire on Linda Lane on March 18, 2026.

State Police from the Wurtsboro barracks responded to the structure fire at approximately 8:40 p.m.

The Bloomingburg Fire Department advised troopers upon arrival that an individual was believed to be inside the residence.

After the fire was extinguished, responders located a deceased male within the home.

A neighbor heard a loud noise outside and then observed the residence fully engulfed in flames, according to the preliminary investigation.

The neighbor immediately contacted 911.

The fire is believed to have originated in the vicinity of the kitchen.

The sole occupant was identified as Yitzchak Vann, 64, of Bloomingburg, New York.

Vann was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Fire departments from multiple agencies responded, including Bloomingburg, Wurtsboro, Rock Hill Volunteer, Summitville, Westbrookville Volunteer, Bullville, Pine Bush, Circleville, Walker Valley and Otisville.

Mamakating EMS, Rock Hill EMS, Hatzolah EMS and the Sullivan County Paramedic also responded.

No evidence of criminal activity has been identified.

The investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.
