Woman arrested on grand larceny charge in Oneonta

ONEONTA, NY — New York State Police arrested a woman on a felony grand larceny charge March 15, 2026.

Sherry A. Ashmore, 54, of Laurens, was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a class E felony.

Troopers were dispatched to Walmart on State Highway 23 in the town of Oneonta for a report of a larceny.

Police said Ashmore placed over $1,000 worth of houseware items and items from the garden center into her cart, then went through a register lane but made no attempt to pay for the items.

Walmart Asset Protection members attempted to stop Ashmore outside the store, but she fled on foot, police said.

Troopers located Ashmore at Burger King and arrested her.

Ashmore was processed at State Police Oneonta and released on an appearance ticket.

She is scheduled to appear in Oneonta Town Court on May 19, 2026.
