NEW BEDFORD, MA — Detectives arrested a man after recovering a loaded firearm during an investigation in the city’s South End on Sunday.

Jose Mendonca, 36, of New Bedford, was charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license and possession of ammunition without an FID card.

Detectives from the department’s Violent Crime and Intelligence Unit received information that a male was believed to be in possession of a firearm in the area.

While conducting surveillance on County Street, detectives observed Mendonca walking while gripping a black cross-body bag and repeatedly looking over his shoulder.

Based on the information received and their observations, detectives stopped Mendonca to investigate.

During the stop, the cross-body bag was frisked and a Hi-Point Model C9 firearm was located containing nine rounds of 9mm ammunition in the magazine and one round in the chamber.
