STAMFORD, CT — The Stamford Police Department is warning residents and local businesses about an ongoing scam involving individuals posing as City of Stamford officials in an attempt to collect money.
Scammers are sending emails with fake invoices for services that may appear legitimate.
The emails are being sent from accounts using the domain @usa.com.
The City of Stamford does not use @usa.com email addresses, and anyone can create an email account using that domain.
The FBI recently issued a Public Service Announcement warning about this type of fraud occurring nationwide.
Police are advising residents to be cautious of unsolicited invoices or payment requests claiming to be from the city.
Residents should verify payment requests directly with the city through official contact information before sending money.
Anyone who believes they have received a suspicious email or may have been targeted by this scam should contact the Stamford Police Department.
