Man arrested on stolen property charges in Norwich

NORWICH, NY — A 45-year-old man has been arrested following an investigation into a stolen trailer and snowmobiles.

Gerald C. Schmitt, of Norwich, was arrested after authorities discovered two stolen snowmobiles on his property, according to the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office received a crime tip regarding the possible location of the stolen snowmobiles.

When deputies responded to the location, they discovered two of the stolen snowmobiles.

One of the snowmobiles had been altered, and the other was found covered in an apparent attempt to conceal it from recovery, authorities said.

The investigation began after a 24-foot enclosed trailer and snowmobiles were reported stolen in the Town of Norwich.

Schmitt was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the 3rd degree, tampering with physical evidence and conspiracy in the 5th degree.

He was released on appearance tickets in accordance with New York State Bail Reform and is scheduled to appear in the Town of Norwich Court at a later date.
