Man arrested on firearm charges in Southbridge

SOUTHBRIDGE, MA — A traffic stop for speeding led to the arrest of a Connecticut man found with a stolen firearm early Monday morning.

An officer conducted a motor vehicle stop on South Street at 6:10 a.m. on March 3, 2026, after observing a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed with an obstructed registration plate.

The operator was identified as Jorge J. Ortiz, 41, of East Hartford, Connecticut, who was found to have an active warrant for failing to appear.

Investigation revealed the motor vehicle was unregistered and uninsured.

The officer recovered a stolen large capacity firearm that was loaded.

Ortiz was arrested and charged with warrant arrest for failure to appear, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying ammunition without a license, possession of a stolen firearm, carrying an unsecured firearm, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
