1 min read

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department is warning residents about a text message scam targeting individuals with fake traffic fine notices.

Police said individuals are receiving text messages claiming to be from the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles stating the recipient has an unpaid traffic fine.

The fraudulent message warns that if the fine is not paid immediately, the recipient may face penalties such as license suspension, vehicle registration suspension, additional fees, legal action or impacts to their credit.

Police said the messages are scams.

The Greenwich Police Department will never request payment for tickets or fines via text message, phone call or email.

Additionally, the Greenwich Police Department will not contact individuals who have not paid a ticket.

If a person receives a speeding ticket from an officer, instructions on how to properly address or pay the ticket are printed on the back of the ticket.

Police are advising residents not to click any links or provide personal or financial information.

If a person receives one of these messages, police said to delete it and report it as spam.
