GATES, NY — A Rochester man was arrested early Thursday morning after police found him holding a loaded handgun in a motel stairwell.

Gates police officers responded to the Motel 6 at 1273 Chili Avenue at approximately 4:10 a.m. for a report of a gun point menacing incident.

As officers approached the second floor, individuals in the hallway told them a man with a gun was headed to the stairwell.

Officers found a 9mm bullet and a handgun magazine on the ground while heading to the stairwell.

Officers then located Tyrone King, 51, of Rochester, in the stairwell holding a gun.

Officers gave King multiple commands to drop the weapon.

King eventually complied and was taken into custody without incident.

Officers secured a loaded Taurus 9mm handgun.

Police said King did not possess a pistol permit and was a nine-time convicted felon with two prior convictions involving an illegal firearm.

King served five years in state prison for criminal possession of a weapon second degree, sentenced in January 2017 and released in May 2022.

He was on parole from May 2022 until 2025 related to that charge.

King was charged with criminal possession of a weapon second degree, a class C felony, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon third degree, class D felonies.

He was transported to the Monroe County Jail for arraignment in Monroe County CAP court.
