Suspect strikes officer with vehicle in Holyoke

HOLYOKE, MA — A police officer was struck by a vehicle Thursday afternoon after confronting a shoplifting suspect at a gas station.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:35 p.m. at 820 High Street when an officer located a suspect and vehicle allegedly involved in an earlier shoplifting at TJ Maxx in Holyoke.

The driver, who has refused to be identified, sped away upon seeing police and struck an officer.

The officer was transported to a local hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver fled the wrong way down High Street before entering I-391 South and I-91 South.

Massachusetts State Police deployed stop sticks during the pursuit.

The driver’s vehicle and a Holyoke Police cruiser collided in Springfield.

The vehicle was stopped on Court Street in Springfield, where the driver was arrested.

The suspect was courtesy booked in Springfield and then transported to a local hospital.

Charges will be released Friday.

The suspect is expected to be arraigned in Holyoke District Court on Friday.
