NEW HAVEN, CT — A Shelton man was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison for illegally possessing a shotgun and ammunition as a convicted felon.

Miguel Rivera, also known as “Macho,” 33, of Shelton, received the sentence from U.S. District Judge Omar A. Williams on March 5.

The sentence will run consecutive to a 60-month sentence he is already serving.

In July 2020, Waterbury Police responded to a shots-fired call near William and Laurel Streets.

Rivera, wearing body armor, attempted to flee but was apprehended.

Officers recovered an AK-type rifle with a loaded 30-round magazine, and Rivera had one round of ammunition in his pocket.

In June 2022, while on bond, Shelton Police Department Task Force Officers and Detectives conducted a narcotics and firearms investigation into Rivera.

During that investigation, he was found in possession of a stolen 12-gauge shotgun, ammunition, and two Kevlar vests.

Rivera has prior felony convictions for firearm, robbery, and burglary offenses.

He has been detained since July 13, 2022.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Shelton Police Department, Waterbury Police, and Connecticut State Police.
