PARKESBURG, PA — Police are warning residents about a text message scam targeting motorists.
The Parkesburg Borough Police Department said scammers are sending text messages claiming to be from the “Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Motor Vehicles (DMV)” regarding unpaid traffic tickets or suspended registration.
Police said the messages are fraudulent and recipients should not click links or provide personal or financial information.
PennDOT does not send text messages regarding violations or fines, according to police.
Residents are encouraged to block and delete the numbers associated with the scams.
Police reminded residents not to give personal information to anyone contacting them by phone or text message.
Legitimate businesses do not communicate that way, police said.
