Officer injured during mental health intervention in New Hartford

NEW HARTFORD, NY — A police officer was injured Friday afternoon while responding to a disturbance at a mental health facility.

New Hartford Police officers were called to The Upstate Caring Partners Chadwicks Campus at 3390 Brooks Lane to assist staff with a disturbance inside the building.

Upon arrival, officers encountered a 16-year-old male who was attacking other students and staff members.

Officers and staff attempted to de-escalate the situation to calm the teen, whose name is not being released due to his age.

A determination was made to transport the 16-year-old to the hospital for a mental health evaluation under New York State Mental Health Law Section 9.41.

While attempting to restrain the teen, he bit one of the responding officers, causing an injury to the officer’s hand.

The 16-year-old was ultimately restrained and transported to Wynn Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

The injured officer was also evaluated at Wynn Hospital for the hand injury.
