Man arrested on vandalism charge in Stonington

STONINGTON, ME — A Deer Isle man has been arrested following a vandalism incident at a local market that caused thousands of dollars in damage.

Mark Vallejos, 40, of Deer Isle, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated criminal mischief and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

The incident occurred during the early morning hours of March 1, 2026, when the Burnt Cove Market in Stonington was vandalized.

The suspect damaged the storefront and multiple vehicles parked at the store before brandishing a firearm and fleeing the scene, according to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and detectives responded to the store to investigate.

Throughout the day, investigators collected evidence and interviewed potential witnesses.

The evidence led to the identification of Vallejos and the issuance of an arrest warrant.

During the late-night hours of March 1 and into the early morning hours of March 2, 2026, the sheriff’s office executed a search warrant at a residence in Deer Isle.

Vallejos was taken into custody and additional evidence was collected.

He was transported to the Hancock County Jail.

Vallejos is scheduled to be arraigned in Ellsworth District Court on Monday.
