LAKE GEORGE, NY — The Warren County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers impersonating law enforcement officers to demand money.
The callers are identifying themselves as Warren County sheriff’s officers or police officers, according to the sheriff’s office.
The calls appear on caller ID as either a blocked number or Warren County Sheriff’s Office.
The scammers are telling residents they owe payments to clear a warrant, a citation, contempt of court, bail or for failure to perform jury duty.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office will never call and seek payment or restitution in this manner, according to the warning.
Residents are advised not to give any personal information or make any form of payment over the phone to persons claiming to be a representative of the sheriff’s office.
Anyone who receives this type of call is encouraged to disconnect immediately.
Residents who receive a call they believe may be legitimate or who think they may have been the victim of fraud should call the sheriff’s office at (518) 743-2500.
