SAINT JOHNSBURY, VT — A Portland, Maine, man was arrested after allegedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 91 for nearly 10 miles.
Spencer Howe, 37, of Portland, was taken into custody at 7:53 p.m. Feb. 27, 2026.
Vermont State Police received multiple calls reporting a vehicle traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-91 in Wheelock.
Troopers located and stopped the vehicle in Saint Johnsbury at mile marker 136.2.
An investigation determined the vehicle had traveled from mile marker 146 in Wheelock to mile marker 136.2 in Saint Johnsbury.
Troopers detected several indicators of impairment while speaking with Howe.
Howe was arrested without incident and transported to the Saint Johnsbury Barracks for processing.
He was charged with DUI refusal, gross negligent operation, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
Howe was issued a citation to appear in Caledonia County Superior Court Criminal Division and released.
