Shooting suspect arrested in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, MA — A Rhode Island man wanted in connection with a drive-by shooting was arrested early Wednesday morning by a multi-agency law enforcement team.

Zachary Martins, 26, of Riverside, Rhode Island, was taken into custody at approximately 4:20 a.m. at a home on the 300 block of Main Street in Indian Orchard.

Members of the Springfield Police Firearms Investigation Unit Warrant Apprehension Section, Massachusetts State Police VFAS, Hampden County Sheriff’s Department and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force executed the arrest warrant.

Martins faces multiple charges including drive-by shooting, conspiracy, discharging a firearm when committing a crime of violence resulting in injury, discharging a firearm when committing a crime of violence with no injury, possession of a prohibited firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence, and carrying a pistol or revolver without a license or permit.

He is also charged with two counts of duty to stop for an accident resulting in injury, obstructing an officer in their execution of duty, false report of a crime, and duty to stop for an accident resulting in damage to a vehicle.

Martins is being held pending extradition proceedings to Rhode Island.

Rhode Island State Police Major Crimes Unit also arrested three other individuals in connection with the same incident.

Troy Torres, 20, of Providence, was arrested and processed at State Police Headquarters before being turned over to the Adult Correctional Institutions.

Jamari Bell, 23, of Cranston, who was already incarcerated, was charged with the same offenses as Torres, plus additional drug charges including possession with intent to deliver fentanyl and cocaine.

Joseph Carvalho, 27, of Woonsocket, was arrested and charged with harboring a criminal.

All four suspects are scheduled to be arraigned in Sixth Division District Court.
