Scam warning issued in Cumberland County

1 min read

CARLISLE, PA — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam targeting people seeking concealed carry licenses.

The caller claims to be from the sheriff’s office and tells people they need to take a test for their concealed carry license over the phone, according to the sheriff’s office.

The scammer then asks for a payment method.

The sheriff’s office said it does not make phone calls of this nature from its Firearms and Licensing Division.

The office never asks for any type of payments over the phone, and there is no test required to apply for a license, according to the warning.

The sheriff’s office said its process is to either fill out an application in person and pay in person, or to use its website through a third-party provider called Permitium, where applicants pay and fill out the application at the same time.

Anyone who receives a suspicious call should not provide any personal information or payment.

Residents can contact the sheriff’s office directly at 717-240-7743 to verify whether a call is legitimate.
