Scam alert issued in Cumberland County

1 min read

CARLISLE, PA — Authorities are warning residents about a phone scam targeting people seeking concealed carry licenses.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said callers are falsely claiming to be from the agency and telling people they need to take a test for their concealed carry license over the phone.

The scammers are requesting payment methods during the calls.

Sheriff’s officials said the agency does not make phone calls of this nature from its Firearms and Licensing Division.

The office said it never asks for payments over the phone and no test is required to apply for a license.

The legitimate process requires applicants to either fill out an application in person and pay in person, or complete the application online through a third-party provider called Permitium.

Authorities are advising anyone who receives a suspicious call not to provide personal information or payment.

Residents can contact the sheriff’s office directly at 717-240-7743 to verify whether a call is legitimate.
