WHITEHALL, NY — A Granville man was arrested following an investigation into a vehicle theft in the Village of Whitehall, according to Jeffrey J. Murphy of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to an incident on Skene Street in the Town of Whitehall on Feb. 8, 2026, at about 10:50 p.m.
Investigators determined that Stephen J. Williams Jr., 37, of Granville, stole a vehicle from the Village.
Inside the vehicle was a purse containing three debit cards.
Williams was charged with grand larceny in the third degree, a class D felony, for property valued over $3,000, and three counts of grand larceny in the fourth degree, class E felonies, related to the debit cards.
Williams was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment and remanded to the Washington County Jail.
He is scheduled to appear in the Village of Whitehall Court at a later date.
The investigation was handled by Investigator C. Sullivan.
The New York State Police and the Vermont State Police assisted.
