Man dies after house fire in Augusta

AUGUSTA, ME — A man who was seriously injured in a house fire last week has died at Maine Medical Center.

Michael Keith, 66, of Augusta, died following the Feb. 19 fire at 347 Riverside Drive.

The Augusta Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at approximately 2:03 p.m. that day.

Upon arrival, firefighters located a fire in the basement of a single-family home.

Keith was found outside the home with severe burns.

He was transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta and was subsequently transported by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene to investigate the cause and origin of the fire.

Fire investigators determined the origin of the fire was in the basement.

The cause was ignitable liquids being accidentally ignited near the chimney cleanout door.

Fire Marshal investigators were assisted by Augusta Police and Fire Department.
