SOUTH HADLEY, MA — A traffic stop for a broken headlight led to a police pursuit and drug trafficking arrest Sunday night.
A Chicopee police officer was monitoring traffic on Chicopee Street at approximately 7:18 p.m. when he observed a motor vehicle with a burnt out headlight.
As the vehicle turned onto Prospect Street, the officer pulled behind it and attempted to conduct a traffic stop.
The operator initially pulled to the side of the road, but as the officer was approaching, the operator sped off.
The officer advised dispatch of the fleeing vehicle and other officers began making their way to the area to assist.
After a brief pursuit, the vehicle hit a snow bank near the intersection of Old Lyman Road and Willimansett Street.
The operator immediately fled from the vehicle on foot.
With the assistance of Chicopee Police K-9 Jax and the department’s drone unit, the suspect was located hiding under a vehicle a short distance from the crash scene.
During an inventory of the vehicle, officers located a clear plastic sandwich bag containing multiple individually packaged quantities of a white rock substance believed to be crack cocaine.
Officers also located 10 wax envelopes with a powder substance inside, believed to be heroin.
Alguile Ramirez, 27, of Chicopee, was arrested and charged with fail to stop for police, two warrants, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, violation to conceal number plate, fail to stop/yield, speeding, distribute Class B drug subsequent offense, distribute Class A drug subsequent offense, lights violation and trafficking in 18 grams or more of cocaine.
