Two-vehicle crash on Route 22A in Benson

BENSON, VT — Vermont State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that sent six people to the hospital Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 8:11 a.m. on Vermont Route 22A near Route 144.

Police said Kasey Fredette, 34, of Rutland, was traveling southbound on Route 22A when she was unable to maintain her lane of travel and struck a northbound vehicle.

Fredette was not wearing a seat belt and sustained injuries in the crash.

A passenger in Fredette’s 2013 Hyundai Elantra, Alex Fredette, 29, of Rutland, also was not wearing a seat belt and was injured.

Both occupants of the Hyundai were transported to the hospital.

The operator of the second vehicle, Steven Kekus, 42, of Hampton, NY, was wearing a seat belt and sustained injuries.

Kekus was driving a 2014 Toyota Tundra with three passengers: Cristen Zekus, 40, of Hampton, NY, and two juveniles, ages 15 and 12.

All passengers in the Toyota were wearing seat belts.

Kekus and the three passengers sustained minor injuries and were transported to the hospital.

The injured were taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center and Porter Hospital.

Fredette’s vehicle sustained severe front-end, right side and rear-end damage.

The Toyota sustained severe front-end damage and moderate left-side damage.

Benson and Fair Haven fire personnel and Benson and Fair Haven rescue assisted at the scene.

Road conditions were clear at the time of the crash, though snow was falling.
