MONTPELIER, VT — A former school custodian has been arrested on felony embezzlement and false pretenses charges following an investigation into thefts from the Montpelier Roxbury Public Schools.
Matthew Carten, 42, of Barretown, is accused of stealing approximately $10,206.40 in equipment from three school locations and charging $2,072.93 in personal purchases to school district accounts between Dec. 19 and Dec. 31.
The Montpelier Police Department received a report of the thefts on Jan. 8.
Police say Carten removed items from school property and vandalized tools to make it appear they belonged to him while he was employed as a custodian.
Carten was cited to appear in Washington County Superior Court Criminal Division on March 5 at 8:30 a.m.
